This is a screening tool, not a diagnosis. Only a licensed clinician can diagnose a mental health condition.
About the GAD-7
What GAD-7 score means I should get help?
A score of 10 or higher is the standard cut-point for further evaluation of generalized anxiety disorder. But the threshold is not a gate — if anxiety is interfering with your life at a score of 7, that is reason enough to talk to a clinician.
Can the GAD-7 tell the difference between anxiety types?
Not on its own. It flags anxiety symptoms broadly and performs reasonably well as a screen for panic disorder, social anxiety, and PTSD, but distinguishing between them requires a clinical interview. Panic attacks, specific phobias, and trauma responses each call for different treatment approaches.
I scored low but still feel anxious. What now?
Trust that. The GAD-7 asks about a specific two-week window and a specific set of symptoms — it can miss situational anxiety, health anxiety, and trauma-related symptoms. If anxiety is affecting your life, an evaluation is warranted regardless of your score.
